The hydrological behaviour of a given catchment depends on the multiple interactions that have been taken place over the past recent (days), medium (years), and long (geological) time scales between the main internal (geological) and external (weathering) factors (climatology and meteorology).

These interactions occur at the interface between the lithosphere and the atmosphere and determine the characteristics of terrestrial morphology, of the catchments’ hydrology, of the soils and of the type of land use. Beside these, the actual catchment hydrology is influenced by the many other interactions that take place between the geomorphologic factors, the soil characteristics and the vegetation particularities
